HOW TO: Shifen Lantern Releasing

If you’ve jumped here from my post about going to the Shifen Lantern Festival, Welcome! (If you haven’t, click here to see it!).

When you get to Shifen on the train, you disembark to see lovely traditional Chinese stalls on both sides of the train tracks-with hardly any footpath I might add! At any of these stalls you can buy a lantern which can be released on the same train tracks you came in on!

So off I went and bought a lantern from a shop for about $5AUD. You then have access to paints and you decorate it depending on the different colours of the lantern, these are different wishes for the new year!

Lantern decorated and ready for releasing!

The purple is for professional development, yellow is for monetary prosperity, white is overall wishes and red is relationships and family.

(Lets all just have a lol that its my ex boyfriend in the photo and we didn’t put our relationship on the red side of the lantern at the time when we decorated it-obvs why it ended).

ANYWAY! You can watch your little lantern float away until it gets high enough that the fire will go out and it will pollute Taiwan’s rain forest’s (On that note, check out my [COMING SOON] article on the damage that these festivals cause to the environment).

Happy Travels!
