HOW TO: Petaling Street Market

Petaling street is an absolute assault on your senses.

And if you aren’t going to Asia and expect this, why are you going there?

Petaling street was one of my favourite places in Kuala Lumpur, and you will read elsewhere that some people don’t feel the same way.

The street itself is decorated with beautiful lanterns and there is haggling to be heard a mile away! In the market you will find not only cheap deals but wonderful traditional snacks and delicacies-as well as someone offering to give you a massage for $2AUD (Not sure how legit this was though…). You can experience locals and foreigners alike being thrown into a very chaotic and what appeared to myself as an authentic experience of Malaysian culture-which is something rather tricky to find in a giant hub like KL!

Petaling Street is essentially the epitome of what shopping for knock-off’s in Asia is like. So if you’re not into the arguing, loud noises, strong smells and people pulling on your sleeve- I would not recommend going here.

But, if you’re like me and love a good haggle-definitely check this one out! I got some amazing deals! PLUS ITS PRETTY!

To get here, simply get on a train from KL Sentral Station and get off at Pasar Seni (One Stop towards the towers). Walk about 400-500 meters ahead (away from the National Mosque) and there you are! You will probably hear it before you see it!

Not only does the market itself have an amazing vibe on the inside, but the outer alleys of the market have awesome street art! (The girl on the roof? That was me at scchool!)

And incredible temples!

So before you undersell Petaling street as just another Asian market full of knock offs, get in there and actually try it out! You might be pleasantly surprised!

Have you been to Petaling Street market before? What did you think?
